The hills behind the Riviera have grown flowers for the perfume trade since the sixteenth century, and Grasse, forty minutes from Nice, remains the world capital of the craft. Its great houses also keep laboratories and boutiques on the coast, in Eze, a few steps from the medieval village. That is where I bring guests who want to create their own fragrance, because it lets us combine the workshop with one of the most beautiful villages in France in a single morning or afternoon.
The workshop is private, for your party only, with a specialist perfumer. It begins with a guided visit of the house and its laboratory, so you understand how raw materials become an essence and why a few grams of certain flowers cost what they do. Then you sit at your own organ, the perfumer's bench of bottles, and compose. The perfumer guides you through base, heart and top notes, you smell, adjust, smell again, and after about two hours you leave with your personal fragrance, and the house usually keeps your formula so you can reorder it years later. A glass of champagne is part of the ritual.
Couples, mothers and daughters, friends travelling together, and more men than you would expect. Children from about ten years old take to it with a seriousness that makes the adults laugh. It suits anyone who likes to make something with their hands and their memory; the smell of your own perfume, months later, brings back the village and the sea more vividly than any photograph.
The workshop is priced by the perfume house at 289 euros per participant, paid on site; it is not included in the price of my experience, which is per group. I book it for you when you reserve the Eze visit, because places with the perfumer are limited and the morning slots go first in season. If some of your party prefer to explore the village or sit with a coffee above the sea while others compose, that works perfectly: Eze is small and I stay with whoever wants company.
Grasse is the historic heart, with the museums and the fields, and I take guests there on tailor-made days. But Grasse is a working inland town, forty minutes each way, and its workshops are often larger and shared. For most visitors, the Eze option gives the same perfumer-led creation in a private setting, plus a medieval village with the finest view on the coast, plus Monaco ten minutes away if you want to continue. That is a better day.
The simplest version is my private visit of Eze with the optional workshop, at the half-day rate of 450 euros for your group (up to four hours door to door, pickup included) plus the workshop per participant. The fuller version is a full day from Nice: the market and Old Town in the morning, Eze and the workshop after lunch, 750 euros per group with the vehicle included. Either way, we time the village early or late so the lanes are quiet, and the workshop in the hours between.
These private experiences are the natural next step after this article. Prices are per group, never per person.
About two hours for the visit of the house and the creation itself, on top of the time we spend in the village of Eze.
No. My experience is priced per group; the workshop is priced by the perfume house at 289 euros per participant and paid on site. I handle the booking for you.
Yes, from around ten years old they follow the perfumer very well, and the creation becomes a shared family souvenir.
