Is Monaco Expensive? A Local Guide's Honest Budget Advice

Expensive to live in, not to visit

Monaco is the most expensive square kilometre in Europe to buy an apartment, and guests arrive expecting the day to match. It does not have to. Walking the Rock, watching the changing of the guard at the Palace, strolling the gardens above the port, standing in front of the Casino at golden hour: all of that is free. I guide Monaco almost every week, and the days my guests love most are rarely the days they spend the most.

What actually costs money

Three things carry a real price tag: museums, restaurants and parking. The Oceanographic Museum and the Prince's Palace state apartments are both worth their tickets, roughly the price of a museum in Paris. Entering the gaming rooms of the Casino also has a fee and a dress code, though the atrium is open to look at. Restaurants on the Casino square and the port front charge Monaco prices; two streets back, they charge Riviera prices. Parking is the hidden cost: the public car parks are efficient but not cheap, which is one reason I handle the car and the logistics for you.

Where locals actually eat

Monaco has a working population of tens of thousands who lunch every day without spending a fortune. The covered market of La Condamine, a few minutes below the Rock, is where I take guests who want socca, barbagiuan and a glass of wine at a communal table. The streets around the market and the Fontvieille side have honest bistros. And in Monaco-Ville, the old town on the Rock, a handful of family restaurants serve lunch to the people who work at the Palace and the cathedral.

The costs you can avoid entirely

You do not need a taxi inside Monaco: the Principality is small, and its public lifts and escalators connect the levels for free. You do not need to buy a ticket to see the famous view from the Palace square or from the gardens of Saint-Martin. You do not need to eat on the Casino square to feel the atmosphere; a coffee at the Café de Paris terrace gives you the whole theatre for the price of a coffee, a Monaco coffee, admittedly.

How I keep a Monaco day reasonable

I pair Monaco with Eze, ten minutes up the hill, so the day has contrast and a quiet lunch option in the village. I park once, in the right place for the route we are taking, and we move on foot from there. I time the Rock for the guard ceremony and the Casino for the late afternoon light, when the square fills with cars worth photographing. And I tell you in advance which tickets are worth it for your interests, so you spend on the museum you will remember rather than the one you feel you should see.

So, is it worth it?

Yes, if you go for what Monaco is, a tiny, improbable, immaculately kept city-state with a real history, rather than for a fantasy of champagne on a yacht. A half day with me in Monaco and Eze costs 450 euros for your whole group, whether you are two or six, and the only extras are the tickets you choose and your lunch. That is the honest budget.

Frequently asked

Is Monaco free to enter?

Yes. There is no border control or entry fee; you simply drive or walk in from France. Only museums, the Casino gaming rooms and parking are paid.

How much should I budget for lunch in Monaco?

Around the port or the Casino square, expect prices well above the rest of the Riviera. At the La Condamine market or in the lanes of Monaco-Ville, a good lunch costs about what it would in Nice.

Is a private guide for Monaco worth the price?

If you want context, timing and no logistics, yes. My Monaco and Eze half day is 450 euros per group, up to 15 guests, with the electric vehicle included for up to 3 guests.
